How Does a Pole Banner Hardware System Work?

Fiberglass Banner Arms
The arms are the horizontal rods the banner's pole pockets slide over. Fiberglass is commonly used because it is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and capable of elastic flex under load. Arm length is sized in relation to your finished banner width: the arm has to span the pocket and hold the banner flat. In many systems the arms are a commonly replaceable component, which is worth considering before you commit to a system: it's usually easier and cheaper to replace an arm than an entire setup.

Stainless Steel Mounting Bands
On most street and light poles, brackets are secured with stainless steel banding rather than drilling. The band wraps the pole and locks the bracket in place: no holes in the pole, and corrosion resistance outdoors. A quick-release style band is also reusable and releasable, so the hardware can be removed or relocated when needed.

Small parts do the last part of the job: pins hold arms in their sockets, caps protect the ends, and zip ties secure the banner to the arm. Search for banner hardware and you'll see a lot of 18 in, 24 in, 30 in, 36 in. Those are common arm widths the market organizes catalogs around. Useful shorthand, but a nominal width alone doesn't tell you whether a system suits your banner and location. Banner surface area, wind exposure, pole type, and the system's own capacity all matter.

Canadian Pole-Owner Requirements: Check Before You Order
In Canada, street and light poles are typically owned by a municipality or a utility, and attaching anything to them usually requires permission, and can carry conditions on the hardware, banner dimensions, and configuration. Requirements vary between municipalities, utilities, BIAs, private pole owners, and individual programs. Two examples show how different they can be:

Can Pole Banner Hardware Be Installed on Any Light Pole?
No. A pole has to be suitable and permitted. Common reasons a pole isn't a candidate:
- the pole is owned by a municipality or utility that hasn't authorized attachments,
- structural or utility restrictions on the pole,
- municipal or program standards for the corridor,

Whether banding, bolting, or lag-screwing is correct depends on the pole, the hardware, the manufacturer's instructions, and the pole owner's rules. Don't drill into municipal, utility, or lighting poles without explicit authorization.
Can Existing Pole Banner Hardware Be Reused?
Sometimes. It depends on the condition and details of what's already installed:
- hardware condition (cracks, corrosion, fatigue),
- arm diameter and length,
- the mounting system in place,
- whether replacement components are available,

- manufacturer/system compatibility,
- and any damage or unknown history.
